We understand that visiting a physiotherapist for the first time can raise a few questions. To help you feel informed and confident before your appointment, we’ve answered some of the most common queries below.
1. Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No, you don’t need a referral to see a physiotherapist. You can book directly with us. However, if you’ve been referred by your GP or consultant, please bring any relevant letters, scan reports, or medical documentation to your appointment.
2. What should I wear to my appointment?
Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. If we’re assessing a specific area (such as your shoulder, knee, or back), you may be asked to expose that area so your physiotherapist can perform a proper assessment.
3. What happens during my first appointment?
Your initial assessment involves a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle, followed by a physical examination to identify the cause of your problem. Your physiotherapist will explain the findings, provide an expert diagnosis, and begin treatment if appropriate. You’ll also receive a personalised, evidence-based rehabilitation plan to guide your recovery.
4. How long are the sessions?
Initial Assessment & Diagnosis: 45 minutes
Follow up appointment: 30 minutes
This allows sufficient time for a thorough assessment, hands-on treatment, and review of your progress.
5. What conditions do you treat?
We provide expert assessment and treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal and movement-related conditions, including:
Back and neck pain
Sports injuries
Post-surgical rehabilitation
Joint and muscle pain
Postural or work-related conditions
Mobility and movement limitations
6. Is physiotherapy treatment painful?
Physiotherapy is generally safe and effective. Some treatments may cause mild discomfort or temporary soreness as your body adjusts, but your therapist will always work within your comfort level and explain each technique before proceeding.
7. How many sessions will I need?
The number of physiotherapy sessions required varies for each individual and depends on several factors. These include the complexity and nature of your condition, how long you have been experiencing symptoms, and your body’s unique healing and recovery process. Your physiotherapist will discuss an estimated treatment plan after your initial assessment and adjust it as your progress is reviewed.
8. What if I need a referral for imaging?
If your physiotherapist believes further investigations such as an X-ray, MRI, or ultrasound are clinically appropriate, they can provide a referral letter to your GP or consultant. Imaging is only recommended when it will meaningfully contribute to diagnosis or treatment planning, in line with evidence-based practice.
9. Can I claim through my health insurance?
Yes, we are recognised by most major health insurance providers. Please check with your insurer for details on coverage and whether a referral is required before booking.
10. What is your cancellation policy?
We kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice or missed appointments may incur a fee.
